An addiction to beating a high score in Flappy Bird leads to an epiphany. Flappy Bird may be the perfect metaphor for love and relationships. Here’s why.

The game of love is as frustrating as Flappy Bird.

Last week in the middle of a frustrating game of Flappy Bird, I took a screenshot and uploaded to Instagram.

“I swear, I’m about to throw my phone out the window because of the damn Flappy Bird. Every time I think I can beat my score this jerk hits a pipe and drops like a brick,” I furiously captioned my picture.

Seconds later, some of my followers shared in my frustration while others asked me what the heck is a flappy bird. At first, I begged them not to download the game. While simple – tap your screen and get the bird to safely fly through Super Mario pipes – it’s addictive, and moreover my bird seems to hit the first pipe and drop 98 percent of the time. I think I tried 45 times to get it through the first pipe my first time. When I finally made it through pipe number 15, he drops. I’ve been trying to beat my high score ever since.

“So why don’t you just stop playing?” a friend asked me. I responded automatically, “Because the Flappy Bird is basically a metaphor for love and I’m a hopeless romantic.”

Maybe the answer was a little overzealous, and yes, I was mostly joking, but if you bear with me I can explain.

The concept of love is simple. Once you commit to the right person love is supposed to naturally follow. At least that’s the fantasy. Anyone who has ever searched or been in love before would not use the word “simple” to describe it. Finding it is a butterflies-filled, deliciously agonizing, dangerously hopeful rollercoaster ride. Keeping it is a partner who has your back, compromise, hard work, and being patient and kind when you feel anything but. When you lose it? It’s a long road toward trust, passing briefly through hopelessness, despair and doubting if you’ll ever find it again.

Every time I crash the Flappy Bird into a pipe there are not enough words to describe the frustration I feel. Every time I make it through I’m hopeful I can get further, do it better, and then inevitably the bird drops without warning. I yell, “ Eff this bird, yo! I’m done!” even though I know I’m not. Yes, it’s just a game, but how many times has someone given you love advice and compared it to playing a game? Telling you to play your position. How many times have you said “ Eff this! I’m giving up!” knowing you’re only half kidding?

Of course some will say I am over thinking a game (and they would be right). I play the game for entertainment when bored on my long subway ride home. The frustrating emotions, the need to do better next time, are no different than how I’m approaching love these days. If my high score of 15 on Flappy Bird is any indication, my love life has a long way to go. Hopefully you’re faring better.

When you experience love at first night, grab a hold.

I’ve never been the kind of girl who dwells on romantic relationships, or even on dating. I have always found that there are more important things in life than simply finding love. Until a regular spring afternoon changed my perspective.

I went into a local coffee shop to get some work done. I had come to this coffee shop so many times; it had almost become a routine. I noticed it was a little more empty than usual and I was glad. I put in my headphones and began to work.

A voice then caught my attention. “Can I use the outlet under your seat?

He had just walked in. I nodded and noted his attractive features. About 6’3, rugged-looking beard, and wearing a blue baseball tee and regular jeans: a regular guy but there was something about him that I found intriguing.

He plugged in his computer and sat across from me. The tiny table could barely hold our two laptops. I felt an undeniable desire to get to know him.

“Do you come to the coffee shop often? I asked.

He said he didn’t. That his WiFi stopped working at his apartment.

“What are you working on? I questioned.

“I am analyzing the works of Albert Camus and Ken Kesey for my literature class,” he replied. I couldn’t help but smile. They are my favorite authors.

“What kind of music are you listening to? He asked. I began to explain that I was listening to a genre of music known as psychedelic rock, a niche in music that not many people know about, when he suddenly asked if I was listening to Odyssey Oracle. I was.

“That is my favorite record,” he commented.

In that moment I couldn’t help but wonder if this was love at first sight. It this is what love feels like. I felt overwhelmed with powerful emotions. I felt as though he was made especially for me.

We talked for another twenty minutes or so, until I l noticed that I was twenty minutes late for class. I fumbled, packing up my things quickly and hoping he’d ask for my phone number. He didn’t. We never exchanged contact information, and everyday for many days I hoped that I would run into him again. Whenever I returned to that same coffee shop, I hoped that he’d be sitting there. I never even got his name.

Now, it’s just a memory. I know now what it feels like to experience love at first sight. It is an indescribable yet unmistakable feeling. If I’m lucky enough to experience it again, I wont take it for granted. I will act on it instead of letting life get in the way.
